J Hus - Lean and Bop ft Doccy Docs.
Release Date: 2015
Youtube Video Released: May 24th 2015
Artist: J Hus
Duration: 4:11
Genre: Grime/Rap
Synopsis of Video.
Like other grime videos, Lean and Bop has a fast paced edit style to it.
With the majority of shots being linked to the beat and bass.
The Video has different scenes and locations: the video has you traditional studio scene where the background is a certain colour mostly white or green and has the actors in front wearing their costumes, this effect is intended to make the audience to focus on the actors and not on the background. we plan to use a similar effect in our video (but we plan to use a black background).
The video itself does not appear to have a narrative, as we can clearly see, the video is performace based and relies on the actors dancing and the editing to keep the audience engaged.
The video itself is satisfying to watch because the creators were smart and done something which you do not really see in music videos, they got the public to dance and get involved with them.
With different locations in South, East, West and North London. The video had locations as a feature which promoted it to make it more engaging and interesting for the audience.
Camera and Editing
The video has mostly medium and medium long shots. since it is entirely performance based and it is important to the audience so that they can see the actors, dancing and singing the song,
(Medium Close)
The video editor has placed text to make the words being sang hold greater meaning "LEAN AND BOP."
These two shots have been snipped from the actual music video showing how the editor uses colour and font to make the text appear more attractive and appealing to the audience.
Representation of Stars.
In the video, the main point of attention is J hus (artist). He and one other actor are wearing clothing which is branded: "The Ugliest." Only them two are wearing that brand and this points out that they are the main actors.
J hus does most of the lip syncing all of the other performers are just dancing and syncing a few words of the song.
The actors clothing is important since it sends a lot of messages to the audience.
The actors are constantly smiling throughout the video so this type of rap is not mean or angry or taboo. and the fact that the general public involved shows that it is a polite and publicly friendly song.
In the rap there is no ill words used or any ill thoughts towards anyone.
These two shots are screen grabs from the actual music video, and as we can see is that J hus is engaging with the general public and also there is no sexism or racism, since in some rap videos there is only boys and in terms of race it focuses on one race, in white videos there will be majority white people and in black videos there will be mostly black people. in Lean and Bop, both girls and boys are featured and people of different races, in explanation the video is anti - discriminating;
Mise en Scene:
These two screenshots are from the actual music video of the song.
The screenshot above is taken of the actors dancing outside which sends the message to look at everything and not just the actors. The other screenshot (left) is taken in a way telling the audience to focus on the actor being shown and nothing else.
The costumes used in these videos are typical in terms of the genre, since in grime and rap videos you see people wearing tracksuits and clothing that is designed and worn in the context of rap videos. Hoodies from brands of adidas, nike and jordan.
Editing.
The style of editing in this video is fast paced and the edit techniques are all straight cuts, and there are a minimal amount of fades. The editing is linked to the beat. i.e. the shot will only change in sync with the beat.
The Editor inlcudes text for certain phrases to highlight their importance. The words which appear the most are LEAN and BOP. The editor uses different transitions for the text e,g. sling out and just cutting from the text to another scene (straight cut).
Lip Syncing,
The lip syncing is done throughout the video, however some scenes are focused on the actors performance and dance moves, however there is the main group of lip syncers we see in the beginning and it is mostly them who lip sync the song others just dance to the song, The editing has been done in a way to link with the lip sync and the dance moves link to the lyrics. e.g. they will bop when the word BOP is sang, and they will LEAN TO THE SIDE when it is announced,
What We Plan to use From This in Our Video.
In our music video we plan to use elements from this song such as the style of editing, the use of text and editing in line with the beat. We plan to use a similar style of dress, as it links well with the rap and grime genre.
We plan to feature text in the same way as it is in this video. Put it in at the places where important phrases are mentioned. We also plan to link our dance moves to the beat and the style editing will link to the beat aswell.
